Since I have Good Friday off from work and since the kids were out of school since Wednesday, we decided to take off for a quick fun trip. We decided to go for two nights in Cologne. We took off on Friday late morning, and headed to the town of Xanten. There is a big archaeological park from the ancient ruins of an old Roman colony.
We started off by walking through the large amphitheater. The most exciting part was imaging fighting with other gladiators and the lions that were trying to eat us.
Charlie just wanted to play in the dirt. I'm pretty sure he would have been eaten first.
They had a pretty interesting museum dedicated to the ruins and the stuff dug out.
It was a very interactive museum where the kids were able to touch a lot of things and even smell some things.
And they had a fun area where the kids could dress up as Roman soldiers.
Charlie was not interested in the dress up but was very interested in the pretend horse. He spent about 20 minutes getting in and off this thing.
We spent a lot more time in the city of Xanten that I thought we would have, especially for it being a city I had never heard of the day before. The city has a cool city wall around it complete with a very cute church and a windmill.
We continued on our journey to Cologne. It was getting to be late at night by that time so we had dinner and went to bed.
If we had driven straight through, it would have taken us just over an hour and a half. To put that in perspective, that is only a bit further than a trip from Peachtree City to Chattanooga or about the same as Idaho Falls from Ogden. It turns out that there are quite a few really cool cities with three hours of our place.
